The short answer: A postpartum doula mothers the mother.
The long answer: A postpartum doula is a trained professional who supports you and your family during the twelve weeks following birth. Your doula will assist you as you recover from birth. She will educate your partner on what to expect during this time and offer ways to support you. She will assist with sibling care and ways to include older children. Ultimately, your postpartum doula will help you navigate this new chapter.
There are so many benefits to having a doula on your postpartum support team.
-When challenges arise, she will guide you through your options. You will feel confident deciding what’s best for you and your baby. Information provided by your postpartum doula is evidence based and not a personal opinion.
-While you get some much needed rest or spend time getting to know your baby, your doula will help keep the household in order. Washing bottles and pump parts, loading and unloading the dishwasher, washing and folding laundry, meal prep and changing the bed sheets are just a few tasks to help ease your load. She will help check things off on your to do list.
-She will teach you the basics of caring for your little one and ways to bond.
-Postpartum doulas are trained to identify postpartum mood disorders and provide breastfeeding support. If there are concerns that are not within our scope of practice, we will always refer you to another professional who is trained specifically to meet your needs.
-Most importantly your postpartum doula is there for you. She will explain what to expect during the upcoming weeks as you recover. She will guide you through the physical recovery by keeping you comfortable and well rested and the emotional recovery by offering you coping skills as you adjust to the changes.
